A Brief History of Urban Trust Bank


 

Our organization has a proud history of serving urban communities. Empowered by a world-class team of owners and executives, Urban Trust Bank has transformed from a single-branch community bank to a strong regional financial institution with a growing national presence. Highlights of our 45 year history are listed below:

 

  • In 1963, Urban Trust Bank was originally incorporated in the Washington Shores neighborhood of Orlando, Florida as Washington Shores Federal Savings Bank.

  • The bank received a Federal Charter from the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) in June, 1990, and became Metro Savings Bank, F.S.B.

  • In 2005, Robert L. Johnson acquired controlling interest in Metro Savings Bank, partnering with businessman Frank Hanna Jr.

  • The organization's name was changed to Urban Trust Bank in May, 2006, to reflect a broader, more substantial mission.

  • In January, 2007, Urban Trust Bank announced an agreement to open branches inside select Walmart® Stores.

  • In June, 2008, Urban Trust Bank's headquarters was relocated to Lake Mary, Florida (near Orlando).
  • Urban Trust Bank announced a substantial capital investment by The Clinton Group in May, 2009.
  • In May, 2009, Urban Trust Bank executes an agreement with Suntrust Bank to take over 7 new branches formerly operated by Suntrust.
  • In May, 2010, Urban Trust Bank was recognized by Black Enterprise Magazine as the second largest African-American controlled bank in the country.
